The following paper examines, from a multimodal perspective, a counseling sequence between a teacher and a student in the tenth grade at an Italian high school during a lesson of Extensive Reading in German as a foreign language. The article offers a contribution to the interaction research in the foreign language teaching and learning. It starts with an overview of various research approaches to the foreign language teaching and learning, from the 60s to the present days. A multimodal analysis of an excerpt of videorecorded classroom interaction is then provided. The analysis is focused on several aspects of classroom participation and teaching sequences. Some implications of the present research for teachers' training are finally provided.

The function of olfactory experience in reasoning : An empirical study

This study reports the role of olfactory experience (i. e. smell of medication) in a nine-year old girl’s reasoning in pair-work situation where the children were asked to choose items useful on a desert island. The extract analysed here is part of the larger data set of my dissertation, in which I investigate how sensory-motor activities involved in reasoning. I video-recorded an experimental task, in which the participants (N=27; age=9; Hungarian L1) have been asked to choose 7 items out of 14 to take those to an imaginary uninhabited island. The article deals with interactional processes in video conferences that took place as part of an international training and further education event for DaF-teachers. The focus is on showing how the teachers request feedback from each other in relation to the topics to be discussed and in what form they receive it. Furthermore, the role of moderation should also be examined. The aim of the study is to reveal interaction patterns that characterize the behavior of teachers in the context of digital education in order to promote a professional feedback culture when dealing with lesson observation.

Transmediating argumentation : Students composing across written essays and digital videos in higher education

This comparative study examined how university students built an argument in written essays and multimodal digital videos, and how their argumentation transmediated across these two mediums. Data analysis involved 1) analysis of content in both written essays and digital videos; 2) the development of transmediation visualizations to elucidate how ideas were transformed from essays into videos; and 3) multimodal analysis to understand the communicative affordances and constrains for argumentation with each medium.
